Star Wars: Episode 1 in 3D!

Before we get into this I have to say something. I know a lot of people are so very angry with Mr. Lucas for Episodes 1 - 3. They anxiously awaited years and years to be angry about someone else's passion project. This doesn't suit me. Geeks have a tendency to create an image in their heads of how something should be in order to suit their desires and wishes without any regard for the creator's vision or intentions. It is no wonder that George Lucas is off his rocker now and refusing to make any more movies! How cruel! If you look back at any of his movies, they suffer from the same issues that people have with Episodes 1 - 3. No, they don't all have Jar-Jar Binks... If you look at the original trilogy (which I adore) the dialogue in that movie is terrible! Lucas dialogue has been and will probably always be terrible but it doesn't matter! That's not what it's about. It's about the fantastic character development and the technological advancements which Episode 1 has galore. When you're watching Episode 1, keep in mind that this is a movie that is supposed to be geared toward children!

Okay, now I can move on.

I probably haven't seen this movie since it was out in theaters the first time. I was pleasantly surprised that my brain had written in my Jar-Jar Binks than was actually present. That was a relief. It is an enjoyable movie that was made more interesting by the 3d. I was pleasantly surprised that Lucas didn't take the campy route with the addition of the 3d and instead, simply added some depth of field to the picture. I was fully expecting light sabers flying at my face but that was not so! Of course, the final battle and the pod racing scenes were the absolute coolest.

So if you can quit your whining for a couple hours, go and see this movie. If you're disappointed, well I don't really know what to tell you. I'm going to guess that's probably your fault and has nothing to do with the movie.

Friday Playlist

I've been thinking a lot about the music I listen to at work and how some of it makes my day a little easier and some of it leaves me weeping at my desk. The latter usually doesn't last very long on my playlist. So out of about 1,000 songs, here is a playlist of some of the music the keeps me cruising the best.

1. "Do I Disappoint You" Rufus Wainwright
2. "I'm Afraid of Americans" David Bowie
3. "I Feel Fantastic" Jonathan Coulton
4. "DQ Blizzard" MC Chris
5. "Still Alive" Jonathan Coulton
6. "Black Tongue" Yeah Yeah Yeahs
7. "Personal Jesus" Marilyn Manson (I actually have three versions of this song. Love it!)
8. "Night Work" Scissor Sisters
9. "Crack of Doom" Tiger Lilies
10. "Nasty Habits" Oingo Boingo
11. "God's Away on Business" Tom Waits
12. "Who Do You Want to be Today" Oingo Boingo
13. "Slide Show" Rufus Wainwright
14. "Edge of Glory" Lady Gaga
15. "Astronaut" Amanda Palmer
16. "I am Not a Whore" LMFAO
17. "Party in the CIA" Weird Al

Enjoy!

Happy Birthday, Mr. Lincoln!

I couldn't NOT post this...

Movie Review: Chronicle

HO. LY. SHIT. This movie is not the kind of movie I typically go see in theaters but I'm really glad I did. The cinematography made me a little sea sick but it was totally worth it!

The movie is supposed to be "found" images filmed by a troubled teenager named Andrew who at first just seems to want to have evidence that his father is an abusive alcoholic and his mother is dying. He decides to film everything. People at his high school already don't seem to like him much but then pointing a video camera at them just makes it worse. One night at a party Andrew is approached by his cousin, Matt and the school council hot-shot, Steve to bring his video camera and see this weird thing they found in a field. It is never really discovered what the thing is, where it is from or what it does bu that doesn't really matter. The thing they find emits some kind of power which the three boys absorb which causes their noses to bleed and the video camera to freak out. The next day, they find they can move small objects with their mind. With some practice, they begin to move larger things and eventually learn to fly. Each of them has a different idea about what should be done with this power and without meaning to, the three boys embark on very different paths.

I absolutely adore the character development in this movie. Not only are the relationships between the characters absolutely believable, but there is never really a clear villain. When a villain does surface, he never for a second thinks of himself as the Bad Guy. He has very good reasons to back all of his actions and in his mind, every action is validated and for the greater good.

As with any good sci-fi/action movie, the climax is a massive battle between the main characters. This battle was absolutely epic. I am not the kind of person who will verbally express myself in a movie theater (unless it is to ask if we can leave yet during a shitty movie) but I spent the entirety of that battle scrunched up in my seat, eyes wide, muttering, "Oh fuck!" over and over again. Amazing.

I don't want to give away too much of the plot because I really want people to go see this movie. So go. Go. Right now. Find out when the next showing near you is and go see this movie. If you get motion sick, take some drammamein and go.

I give this movie an 8 out of 10.

Presidential Badass

In honor of Mr. Lincoln's birthday tomorrow, I want to have a discussion on presidential badasses. Yes, this is absolutely nerdy. It has been said that Mr. Obama is our first Nerd President and I would have to agree with this. He is the first president to admit to enjoying science fiction and has been photographed many times in public showing his Star Wars love. Observe exhibit A and B:

See? Nerdy! And I have to say, politics aside, I am proud to have a nerd president. I don't think it matters what he has done with his time in office, he has proven that politics is not another sport that only jocks excel at. There is room at the top for nerds! I think this country should be run by nerds instead of hot-headed jocks. Who would you rather have a finger on the self-destruct button: a former football player whose aggressive behavior was applauded or captain of the chess team who methodically thought out his every move well in advance? That's what I thought.

But I am not the only person who is a fan of our nerd president. Ladies and Gentlemen, John Hodgman.

Sure, Mr. Obama cannot be the nerd each of us wants all the time but even George Lucas cannot make the Star Wars we want. We nerds are highly creative and highly demanding people. I would argue that pleasing us is nigh impossible. (More on my thoughts on Star Wars later.) The fact is, we need to embrace Mr. Obama and Mr. Lucas alike for their effort and for making it okay to be nerds. I don't think it is coincidental that nerd culture has penetrated mainstream culture in such a large way as it has in the last few years and a nerdy president just happens to be in office.

May the Force be with you, Mr. President.

Nerdy Music Chameleon Circuit

This is why I listen to Podcasts. They tell me about nerdy music I would not otherwise know about. I LOVE that! Today I learned about what appears to be a one-man-band called Chameleon Circuit who ONLY writes songs about Doctor Who. I know, awesome right?! Here is an example.

Enjoy! :-3

EDIT: I just looked at the band's Wikipedia page and it is not just one guy. It is several British bloggers.
