The Aquabats! Super Show!

I have been a fan of The Aquabats, the ska band, since I was in junior high. I have all of their albums and they have been in heavy rotation since I first was introduced to them by a friend. When The Commander created "Yo Gabba Gabba," I watched. Unfortunately, I didn't know anyone with really little kids at the time so I couldn't create little ska babies. I was incredibly thrilled to learn a month or so ago that there was going to be a new show on Saturday mornings featuring the whole band, I was thrilled! I am fortunate in that my honey is a ska fan as well so I was not the only one running around the house like a crazy person.

If you're looking for big budget, descent acting and high end special effects, go elsewhere. Your kind is not welcome here. If you have ever said the phrase, "H.R. Puffinstuff is fricken' rad!" then you will not be disappointed. This is a show that is literally on tv on Saturday morning and is in the 1970s Saturday morning programming style. The monsters are made out of household items and rubber masks, the goals of the adventures are set low (waffles!) and The Aquabats are left to do what they do best. Totally rock out, dude!

Check it out. I doubt this show has long for this world.

21 Jump Street

I didn't want to see this movie. I thought it looked dumb as hell. Color me surprised when Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie an 85%! With the recommendation of The Internets, my exhaustion from spending all of Saturday on my feet cooking St. Patrick's Day dinner and the fact that there really wasn't anything interesting out that weekend, I went to see this movie last Sunday.

That all being said, I really enjoyed this movie. It had good character development and was genuinely funny. Early in the film, the movie acknowledges that yes, there have been a lot of movies being made recently based off 80s culture, yes it is getting old and yes, it is because the people who are really in charge just aren't very creative. By recognizing that what they're doing is feeding into the beating of the dead horse that is the 1980s, it allows the audience to move past this idea and just enjoy the movie for the odd buddy comedy it is.

This is a super fun movie but it is not one that absolutely needs to be seen in theaters. This could very well be a good movie to turn into a drinking game at home on a Friday night. Highly enjoyable. I absolutely recommend.

Doctor Who Teaser Trailer!

Teasers trailers are full of No Fair. I am very glad though to see Miss Amy Pond.

Young Nerdlings of the world, rejoice!

Lauren Faust, the wonderful animation genius we have to thank for "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends" and "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic," is at it again! There is a new show that unfortunately, has not been signed yet called "Super Best Friends Forever!" It is a cartoon featuring teen Wonder Girl, Batgirl and Super Girl as, as you can imagine Besties!!!!

I welcome this show with open arms and will buy it on dvd for any daughters I may ever bear. Judge for yourself.

New companion announced!!!!

This morning the BBC announced the actress who is destined to become The Doctor's next companion. Of course, I'm skeptical. She looks YOUNG. In reality, she's 25 but that doesn't mean that's how old her character will be. Luckily, we will get five more episodes of Amy and Rory but I don't want to let them go!!

Hot Nerd Friday: Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan is so damn cute!!! Oh geez, I have such a crush on her. I want to eat her dimples like candy. She has Nerd Cred from play Miss Sally Sparrow in the "Blink" episodes of Doctor Who and she was fantastic in "An Education." I love her to pieces!

Happy Friday, everyone!

Nerd Girls Need Love, Too!

An oldie but a goodie... (Due to my job, I just wrote Google about five times before successfully writing goodie.)

Geek Girls Unite by Leslie Simon

I got this book for Christmas from my honey. I am his cute little nerd and that's the way he likes it! (Fortunately, that's the way I like it, too.) This book is great in a lot of ways but in other ways, not so much. I really, really wanted to like it but then I realized that I'm a nerd and I'm at least somewhat critical of everything. So let's break it up.

First, what I don't like about this book:
- they suggested that Twitards are people, too and that the Geek Girl community should be more welcoming to them. And also, that I should stop calling them Twitards. Not a chance.
- There were inaccuracies. When discussing Felicia Day (Queen of the Internet) they suggested that us Geek Girls are foaming at the mouth in anticipation of Miss Day reprising her role as Penny in the sequel to "Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog." Penny died. Not possible. Also, she said that in the Tank Girl movie, Tank Girl's boyfriend Booga was played by Ice T. False. Booga is played by Jeff Kober. Ice T plays a badass named T-Saint.
- She assumes we're all looking for boyfriends. Not so. The Geek Lesbian community is huge.

What I do like:
- It is pretty inclusive. There's a lot of stuff in here that I'm surprised the author was able to dig up. No she didn't get everything right, but she did get some things! Honorable.
- It's kind of like a field guide! If you were bird-watching for Geek Girls, this is the book for you. It's a whole host of topics you can use to either start a conversation and cozy up to this girl or get a drink thrown in your face for being on the wrong side of the argument.

I give this book a three out of five. I'm still undecided on if I would recommend this book to other people. Really, I think this will just be a pretty spine on my shelf.

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

This is not my usual pick but it was lent to me by a friend. I have always enjoyed learning about how other people view the world and the things that people believe in order to fill their lives with meaning. This is why I studied the Bible even though I'm not a Christian, read up on Buddhism even though I'm not a Buddhist, and read the Satanic Bible even though I'm not a Satanist. It is easier to understand why people do the things they do when you have some knowledge of their chosen mythology.

This is a somewhat spiritual look at how one man thinks that people should conduct themselves in order to create a better "You" and a better world. A lot of the things in this book are pretty self-explanitory or kind of common sense, however other stuff is interesting. It is my opinion that this book could and should have been a lot shorter. I kind of feel like the author had a page count goal and was doing his best to meet that goal even when the content is fluff.

I also feel like the author doesn't think very highly of his readers. The book is small, 138 pages long and the font is pretty big and yet, the author literally does the thing where he references a concept from chapter one in chapter 3 and then asks, "You remember what that is, right?" Ouch... Yes, I remember.

The concepts are solid and insightful and there are some people that I think would really benefit from this book and the author's teachings. I would recommend this book though selectively. 2 out of 5 stars.

Fables: Homelands

I am a huge fan of the Fables comic series. I am disappointed by every tv show and movie based on a fairy tale that doesn't take some of its influence. The stories in these comics are so good! I read the majority of the series several years ago but they were borrowed from a dear friend. I have been slowly buying the graphic novels and re-reading them. I've also been taking the opportunity to lend the books out to those who I think will enjoy these stories as much as I do.

In this issue Jack branches out into his own storyline which then became its own series. We also come to realize that Guipetto is the creepiest mamba jamba out there. You know, when you read the story as a kid, it is so whimsical that a man can carve a son out of wood and through his love, brought him to life. Love is not the only strong emotion out there. Think about what could happen if a person like that has... other motives.

I fully recommend the Fables series. It is a time investment but it is like eating dark chocolate with fresh raspberries. Absolutely delightful.

How to Live Safely in a Science Fiction Universe by Charles Yu

Do you like Science Fiction? Do you like reading? Have you read this yet? No? Why not? This book absolutely captivated my imagination and made me delight in every turn of the page. The only bad thing I can say about this book is that it is too short. I wanted this story to go on and on forever and I was left with this awful conundrum of wanting to turn the pages as quickly as I could but then wanting to savor every second of the journey.

I do have a funny story about this book. I started this book on my lunch break at work one day. Literally the moment I started reading page one, we had an earthquake. I took this as a good omen. My boss thought this was hilarious but asked me to please not read any books about zombies at work.

I give this book a rating of 5 points out of a possible five! Please go get this book now and put it into your brain.

Trust me, it's good for you.

Hot Nerd Friday: Christina Hendricks

Oh Joanie, oh Red, oh you gorgeous, curvy woman you.. In your cute dresses and your oddly sculpted hair (how does that work?) if only we could get you to lay off the cigs, you'd be the perfect woman...

Oh Saffron, bride of Mal, player of mind-games, the woman who gave us all that beautiful almost-love-scene with Inara. If only... You're psychotic but we all love you anyway.

Now, I have no idea if Christina Hendricks is a nerd herself. I have seen no proof in either direction. What I do know is that she has had a role in two of my very favorite things and I adore her deeply. I want one for Christmas. You know, in that red dress with the bow on the back that she wore to the Sterling, Cooper, Draper, Campbell Christmas party last year... The one that makes her look like a present...

Mmmmmmmm...... Yum.
